Background

The year 2017 was significant for LED Technologies. After the first successful Kickstarter campaign of the Orb, I was assigned project leadership of the Orb app design. The goal was to design an app that allows the user to connect the Orb to their phone via Bluetooth and facilitates interaction with the Orb device.

The biggest challenge I faced throughout this project was balancing what our users needed from the app and what the company wanted. Managing feedback was also challenging because not enough data had been gathered to help drive a decision.

User Research, User Flow and Wireframes

Through a variety of mediums, I tackled the problem that we were trying to solve. We had some basic information from Kickstarter to identify our user. We also researched our competitors’ devices and app connectivity. From this data I developed personas and empathy maps. All of this information combined helped me to understand how to improve the user's control of her device through the experience I designed.

Over the course of a few meetings with the stakeholders, it became clear to me that their expectations were very different from those of the users. I was able to come up with a few different approaches to the problem that satisfied the stakeholders while also prioritizing the user’s needs.

I drew some initial sketches and used them to build wireframes using Sketch.

User Testing

Once all stakeholders signed off on the wireframes, it was time to build a prototype from the wireframes. I created a clickable prototype using InVision, and tested it through in-person interviews. This provided invaluable feedback about the prototype as well as possible, future features that the users wanted in the app.
